Magneto, also known as Max Eisenhardt and Erik Lehnsherr, is a powerful mutant in the Marvel Universe, first appearing in *The X-Men* #1 (September 1963).

Magneto is known for his mastery over magnetism, allowing him to control metal and manipulate magnetic fields. He is often depicted wearing a cape and the version being referred to here is the 'Hard Cape' variety. The character's motivations stem from his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. He sees mutants as the next step in human evolution and believes they should rule over humanity to avoid persecution.

His complex relationship with Professor X is central to his character. While they share the goal of mutant survival, their philosophies on how to achieve it differ drastically, leading to Magneto often acting as an antagonist to the X-Men.
